WITH SYMPATHY  / JANICE BELL CHESSON (FORMER STUDENT & FORMER CHURCH MEMBER )
Dear Anita and Family:

I am Mrs. Ida Lee Bonner's granddaughter. I also was a student at JBC for the school year 1967-1968 and was a member of the church at that time. Bro. Small also held graveside services for my mother and father, George & Loretta Bell in 1980.

I was so sorry to hear of your loss and greatly saddened that I was unable to come to the funeral.

Oh how the saints rejoiced when Harold went home to be with our Lord and Savior.

One of the first things I thought about when I heard was that Mema, mother and daddy were there to meet him.

May God bless you in the days to come.

With Sincerest Sympathy.

Harold Small  / Ted Franks
Harold Small was pastor of the church in Arlington Texas when I was a small boy.  I remember him as being a kind and caring man.
Constant / Craig Branham (Fellow Servant )
Although I never had the pleasure of fellowship with brother small on a day to day basis, I always found him to be congenial, friendly, happy, enthusiastic and loyal to his family his church and the work of the Baptist Missionary Association of America. He was the kind of pastor that supported all whe work without fanfare, The kind of pastors who built our association into what it is today.
With you  / Patty Renfro
In loving memory.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say.
But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; Here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through.
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you.
It's good to have you back again, you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, They'll be here later on.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years.
Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry: it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too;
That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain;
Then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life was worthwhile.
Knowing as I passed along the way I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low;
Just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street and you've got Me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go....from that body to be free.
Remember you're not going.....you're coming here to Me.

Wonderful Memories  / Annie Williams (Church family )

Bro. Small was my pastor for some 28 years. He baptized me as a small girl in the old auditorium of our church when I was 9 years old. There are so many wonderful memories that I have of Bro. Small. He first became my pastor, then he became my friend. Bro. Small saw me through some tough times such as the death of my grandfather, then grandfather, and also my father. He also saw me through very joyious times. Those included the marriage of my husband and I and also the birth of all 3 of my children, 2 of which he baptized. (He also baptized my husband)
The best memory I have of Bro. Small happened while we were on a church trip to New Braunfels to ride the rapids. Bro. Small talked my mother into letting me go one year when I was about 12. I wasn't really old enough to go without my parent(s) but Bro. Small decided to take responsibility for me and have me ride in the canoe with him and Mrs. Small. What safer place to be on a river in a canoe than with your pastor and Mrs. Small? (Who we all know has the most beautiful hairdo always!)
We saw many of our fellow church members take that dreaded spill into the freezing river water. But all the way to the end we stayed dry and in our canoe. At the takeout point Bro. Small got out of the canoe and handed off his camera equipment and other items that we carried down the river and proceeded to help Mrs. Small and myself out of the canoe. To do this, he put a hand on either side of the canoe and flipped us right over!!! I don't know who was more shocked, me or Mrs. Small but bless her heart, I don't think she ever said a cross word about it!
Bro. Small was a wonderful man and was always there with an encouraging word or a smile. The night before I received the news that he had passed away I had a dream. In that dream Bro. Small looked quite a bit older and his hair was white (he actually had quite alot of it in my dream). It was his first day back to the church after his illness and I walked up to him and told him that I wanted him to know that I had never seen a true life miracle until I saw him. He gave me one of those big 'ol grins and hugged me. I like to believe this was Bro. Small stopping by on his way to his new Home to tell me goodbye.
Bro. Small will truly be missed while we are here on this earth but we know that we only said goodbye for a little while.....we will see that grin again when we get Home.

Bro. Small is one of the teachers that I will never forget.  My fondest memory of him is from English class my sophomre year.  I learned a lesson the hard way.  He required us to keep a journal for class and we had to have 70 pages by the end of the semester.  We absolutely could not work on it during class.  Well, one day before class I had opened it to write a few lines down before we got started (on page 69 out of 70).  I was almost done when he closed to door to the classroom (this meant class was starting) so I was finishing up my sentence so I could put it up.  He walked over to my desk on the front row and snatched it up so fast that I left a long pen mark across the whole page.  He walked sternly to the trash can, threw it in and told me to have 70 new pages by tomorrow.  I think I was in shock for a minute because we all know that this is extremely out of character for Bro. Small.  I ran out of class crying and a few friends followed my out to check on me.  One of them, Clay, asked me if I had done my homework.  I was thinking, "What does it matter?  Did you see what he just did to me?"  He told me that I should have done my homework.  He was really making me mad talking about this homework when I had just been wronged in front of the whole class by the nicest teacher at the school.  Clay finally explained that the story we were supposed to read for homework was about morals and how we are supposed to treat people.  Bro. Small was making an example out of me but didn't know that I hadn't done my homework.  I'm sure it didn't take him long to figure it out though!!  I felt so bad because he felt so horrible about the whole thing!!  He told me that he picked me because he knew that I would pick up on what he was doing but because I hadn't read my story, I didn't know why he would do something like that!  So the next semester, in English 2, he told the class to do their homework or he would make them cry and then, of course, shot me a glance and burst into laughter!!  It was great!!  He never let that one go!!  He will always be one of my favorite professors and will be missed dearly.  Love you Bro. Small!!

Harold, Jr., Brother Small, Brother Harold...  / Randa (Goff)Evans (friend, former student )
I knew this man by all names and at some time or another called him by one. I first heard of "Harold, Jr." when my Daddy(Randell Goff)was pastor of Round Prairie Baptist Church. This was when the church was still out in Young Community. Harold, Jr.'s parents were members. In fact, his father, Harold, Sr., was one of the deacons. I got to know the entire family quite well and became fond of them all. Seems like he was kin to about half of the congregation!!

Brother Small was the name I had to adjust to when I entered Jacksonville Baptist College(as it was named back then). Brother Small taught English and Literature to me. I adored his teaching methods. I am still a huge fan of the English language, its uses, and the realms of literature are treasured journies into my ongoing life.

Brother Harold was the name used when I would occasionally visit Mt.Selman. Brother Harold has such a way of teaching and preaching God's Word! He made it easier to understand. Seeds were planted that I am sure, he was not aware of. He truly was a Man of God.

Anita, Keith, Hal, and families..To Brother Harold's entire family...We who knew this man, were blessed a thousand times over. May God always watch over you all..and Until The Roll is Called Up Yonder..You all take care!

I knew Bro. Small long before I ever attended JBC. His Grandson John Eric is my bestfreind, in fact the last time I saw Bro. Small was at Eric's Wedding, last summer. I had probably a closer realtionship with him once I became a student at JBC, than most students. I occasionaly stayed with Eric at his house. In fact my grandparents moved into a house just down the road from him a little over a year ago. So needless to say, he had quite an immpact on me and my life. Often I loved to just talk to him and more to the point listen to what he had to say, except in english class I guess. But, I think some of the most important things I learned while at JBC was when I would simply hear him talking about life, not from a classroom or pulpit, as I heard him do very often, but, from a bench outside the Chapel, or the recliner in his living room.

Strange enough, when I found out he had died I thought back to the wedding I had seen him at last, and recaled the last thing he said to me, "now JD, you be good". Perhaps that is the best thing he ever said to me. I have never forgoten his insight and wisdom, and I am glad this website exist, so that a great man of God will never be forgotten.

I miss you Bro. Small, I will see you again someday. Close

I met Harold when he first came to JBC in the mid 50s.  He was a delight to be around.  I lived next door to Anita and watched as they dated and then married.  I have always admired him as a student and then as a pastor and teacher.

Bro. Small was one of the sweetest men that I knew.  He would do just about anything for you if he could.  I attended church at Mt. Selman from the time I was born and off and on again till the present.  The church was always so welcoming and loving and still is. Bro. Small always had a smile on his face and was always happy to see me.  I also rode on a raft with Bro. Small during our Guadalupe trip and was pushed off right at the stopping point. The raft ran over me and I was caught completely off guard by it. Guess it wasn't just me!  I have a picture from that trip where I put a McDonald's baby bib on him, I later posted it for the whole church to see. It was so funny!  Bro. Small was also my teacher at JBC for two years.  I made sure that I got him!  I will always remember him and love him greatly.  I will one day see him in Heaven with the rest of my friends and family.
